How to Buy a Motorbike in Koh Phangan on a Tourist Visa

Koh Phangan, with its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture, offers a unique experience for travelers. Exploring the island on a motorbike can be an exciting and convenient way to discover its hidden gems. In this guide, I will walk you through the process of buying a motorbike in Koh Phangan on a tourist visa. Whether you are a resident or just visiting for a few months, it is always wise to save on rental fees. The fees can vary from 2.500-5.000 THB per month, depending on the type of bike. Additionally, some rental places may require a 10.000 THB cash deposit or withhold of your passport. So, this guide will provide you with steps on how to purchase your own bike and sell it before you depart.

Koh Phangan on a Motorbike

Requirements for the Buyer

  1. TM30: The first step is easy. At the place where you are staying, ask the owner or manager for the TM30 form. They will require your passport to fill out the necessary information.
  2. Certificate of Residency: After obtaining the TM30, head over to the Immigration Office. Request the Certificate of Residency to Buy and Sell bikes. The fee for this certificate is 1.500 THB if you are on a tourist visa. If you don't have a passport photo, they can take one for an additional 150 THB.
  3. Photocopy of Passport and Current Visa Stamp: Make sure the copy is the exact same size as your passport. It's a little detail, but they won’t take a printed size that’s larger or smaller than the original. Add your signature to each page.

Requirements for the Seller

  1. TM30: Same as buyer.
  2. Photocopy of Passport and Current Visa Stamp: Same as buyer.
  3. Motorbike Greenbook: This has to be under the same name as the TM30 and passport.
  4. Motorbike Serial Number: Check if the motorbike has the serial number engraved somewhere under the seat. Without this number, it will not be possible to change the owner of the bike.

Once you have all the required paperwork, go to the Transportation Office located to the right of Big C. It will make the transfer much faster and easier if buyer and seller go together.

At the Transportation Office, they will verify the paperwork and ensure that the serial numbers of the bike match those in the Greenbook. You will be required to sign two forms and pay a fee depending on the bike model (it was 2.300 THB for a PCX 2016). The new Greenbook will be ready for pickup between 2-4 business days.

And there you have it! With these steps, you'll be cruising around Koh Phangan on your very own motorbike in no time. Don't forget to think about your safety!
